How we met

We met in the summer of 2005 at a high school reunion in Iceland. Both were caught by surprise. We had our professional lives in different countries, had separated from our long time partners and were single with some relationships behind us. After a rendezvous in Copenhagen a couple of weeks later there was no going back. At the authentic "Slow Beer" prizewinning pub Vinstue 90 where Óli used to hang out during his university years in Copenhagen we coincidentally came across a couple of pastors of two differnet nationalities. They blessed our relationship. We both understood that we had found our soul mate. Never before in our lives had we felt the same.

Only a few days into our relationship, we started talking about sailing.

Punky Fish's girly forward cabin
Same month we took off to Göcek in Turkey to sail a Beneteau Oceanis 473 with our three daughters. It was Sif's first sailing experience.

Sif had taken the initiative to arrange for the chartering of Punky Fish through Aziz at the small family owned Budgetsailing in Göcek. What confidence she must have had in her captain since the only available boat, a brand new 47 footer, by far exceeded the size of yachts Óli had previously skippered. No time was to be wasted on insignificant details.

Sif would earn her skipper certificate in Iceland the coming winter.

Skipper
Óli had sailed with his parents on a Hallberg Rassy 42' in Nice, France in his twenties, and later on his cousins Dehler 41' from Marseilles, France to Palma, Mallorca. He held a Yachtmaster Offshore certificate from 2001 and had the secrets of successful skippering in his veins.

'Mister, is this your crew?' Aziz's brother, Hasan, asked politely when he met us in Göcek harbour with the three girls to do the paperwork. The 47 footer took us on a fantastic cruise and we knew that this was our passion.

We got married in Akureyri, Iceland a couple of months later. There was only the two of us present apart from the pastor. A week later Sif took off on her adventure trip hiking in the Siemen mountains, Ethiopia. We kept on living in separate countries for a couple of years and continued hiking and skiing, meeting at airports all over Europe and travelling to destinations all over the world.

We would return to Göcek, Turkey a couple of times to sail Önni's Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45's
